Thomas M.

Masters in Math Education

University of Missouri

19 years of teaching experience

Meet Mr. Meyer, your guide to mathematical success! My journey to becoming a teacher began when I discovered my love of math in high school. My math teachers unlocked this love and future profession for me. In those classes I learned that an engaging, caring, and knowledgeable teacher could activate almost anything in a student. I loved my experience so much I basically decided never to leave high school! I only briefly stepped out of high school to earn my degree from the University of Missouri. After that, I went right back, just teaching this time around :). I have worked in schools both domestically and abroad, both public and private, and taught Alg 1, Alg 2, Geometry, Trig, Math Analysis, Precalculus, IB Math SL and PLTW IED. I continued to refine my craft as a teacher by earning Master’s and Specialist degrees. While teaching, I have also sponsored clubs and NHS, been a coach, served on district committees, and worked with Young Life as a leader and part-time staff person.

Lighthouse Award

Bellarmine University

3 years teaching of experience

Sharing my love of math with other humans is my specialty! I have been a math teacher for three years. Previously, I was a math tutor during my undergraduate program at Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY. Prior to college, I tutored math to my peers while in high school. I’ve always loved math. My favorite topic is algebra, but I enjoy all areas. I’ve had experience in all different grade levels from elementary to college. I was not always the best at math. I had to attend tutoring sessions myself, but it didn’t stop me! I believe my experience with struggling in math courses gives me a unique perspective on how to teach humans how to math.

Marisa B.

Student Centered Math Teacher

University of Washington

11 years of teaching experience

I value how you see yourself as a math learner. Your confidence and learner identity matters. I understand how much of a struggle it can be sometimes, and that's when we need to lean on each other. That's how I made it through when I was in school. I have a Bachelor of Science in mathematics (I was so surprised by this because I thought I was bad a math when I was young), and a Master of Education from the University of Washington. In addition to having my WA teaching license, I also have 18 graduate credits in pure and applied mathematics, such as statistical analysis. I have been teaching math for over 7 years now, ranging from middle school to college level math classes, such as Calculus and Statistics. I absolutely love building student confidence, reasoning, and problem-solving ability. It absolutely empowers the student when this happens, which is why I went into teaching.

Graham S.

2010 Teacher of the Year

University of Kentucky

9 Years of teaching experience

My name is Graham Smith, and I LOVE math. I have been a classroom teacher for seventeen years, in both middle school and high school settings. In that time, I was named the Central Kentucky Special Education Collaborative Teacher of the Year. I have been given numerous awards by students, led professional development sessions on student engagement, and been dropped into a dunking booth by students dozens of times at the end of the school year (the greatest honor of all). Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 are my specialties, but I also love Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and remedial mathematics. I think math is beautiful, elegant, and interesting. A student who fills their mathematical toolbelt with skills will always be able to build something incredible, and it's my job to be sure a student is stocked with the tools they need. Once a student becomes an expert in the tools of the trade, the sky is the limit.

Ruth K.

MA in Math Education

University of Minnesota

25 Years of teaching experience

With more than 25 years of teaching experience, I bring a great blend of knowledge, compassion, and enthusiasm to discussions with students. My students know me as a patient, caring, encouraging, and inspiring teacher; and because of this, I have developed a longstanding, positive rapport with students. I have had the privilege of working with students in grades 5-12 and in all levels of math typical for these grades. From Pre-Algebra to AP Calculus, the rewards have been rich while helping students build their confidence and unlock their own potential. I have earned both a bachelor's and master's degree in secondary math education; but the most profound personal and professional growth has come from working with over 1600 students in my teaching career. Each student offers a unique way of thinking mathematically; and working with the individual student is what has inspired me most as a teacher.

Brandon L.

MA in Teaching

Brandeis University

5 Years of teaching experience

A fine mathematician meets questions with certainty, intuition, and an eye for the aesthetic. My academic journey began at Brandeis University. There, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and later pursued a Master of Arts in Teaching. For three years, I dedicated myself to teaching mathematics at public high schools in Massachusetts. Presently, I am writing my thesis to complete my MSc in Applied Mathematics at the University of Amsterdam. To me, mathematics and its education are my life's passion. My teaching philosophy is best summarized in the words of Henri Poincare, who noted that "in becoming rigorous, mathematical science takes a character so artificial as to strike everyone; it forgets its historical origins; we see how the questions can be answered, we no longer see how and why they are put. [...] intuition must retain its role as complement." I strive to present mathematics as a captivating narrative by first posing intriguing questions. Only then do we proceed with formal definitions.

I can help you use simple ideas to build a complex understanding of physics and chemistry! I have been teaching and tutoring high school physics and chemistry for more than 10 years. I have worked with students of all levels (and in both English and Spanish) to help them find answers to their questions and develop their skills and ideas. I believe that all students come in knowing things and having ideas, so I use what you already know to help you reach the next level of understanding. Before my Masters in Education, I majored in Science and Society at Brown University, and I am interested in how people who are not (or not yet) professional scientists understand and relate to science. I studied physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, and the history and philosophy of science, all of which help me make connections and give me both a deep and broad perspective on science. I love questions, and I am excited to get to work with you to help you level up your skills and understanding!

Physics and chemistry made easy, or at least easier! My main responsibility as an educator is to help my students understand complex concepts in physics and chemistry. In addition to teaching several levels of physics and chemistry for 29+ years, I also have extensive experience in astronomy. This subject relates perfectly to chemistry and physics. Recently I was fortunate enough to fly on one of the last missions of NASA's airborne observatory SOFIA. This specially modified airplane carried a telescope larger than the Hubble. Students really appreciate how these experiences bring chemistry and physics to life with real world applications.

Teaching is my passion. I have been teaching Chemistry for over 16 years at various levels from high school to university level with a diversified student population in the United States both in person and online. I hold a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering. I enjoy teaching. I like to interact with my students and build their confidence and set a positive mindset for their learning. I believe everyone is capable and has the talent to learn but we need to work together to find out the shortcomings and bridge that gap and build from there to meet expectations and progress to the next level. Chemistry is a very interesting but challenging subject. My goal as a teacher is to make it a fun experience and relate the learning to real life applications to make the student aware of the importance of learning Chemistry so it makes sense to them as why to learn Chemistry and help develop problem solving skills.

I have proven success with all kinds of learners. Over the last 20 years, I have worked with 1000’s of Latin learners, as a teacher and tutor. I helped 6th graders failing Latin 1, AP Latin students eager to get a 5 on the AP exam and many would be Latin students who wanted to make sure their first year went smoothly. Each of these students has improved, many of these dramatically. I tailor my instruction to your student. All my students learn differently and as a result, I adapt my teaching to fit the needs of every student. To help each student find success, I develop a student specific learning plan and tailor my instruction to meet each student’s specific learning profile. Additionally, I work hard to establish a connection with each of my students. This rapport helps my students feel comfortable explaining what works and what doesn't work, and it allows me to adjust his lessons accordingly. It also makes our work together fun! With 20 years of experience and a Masters in Education, I have the skills to help your student improve dramatically in Latin.

As a Latin teacher and linguistic activist, I have crafted an educational philosophy led by diversity, equity, and inclusion principles and that continues to develop through daily teaching, Latin conferences, and educational consulting. My methods are supported by recent research in Second Language Acquisition. I combine the best practices of the Active Method and Natural Method in order to optimize student learning. I teach engaging, hands-on, immersive lessons which use Latin as the primary language of instruction. My expertise is in Latin texts by women authors. I am currently a PhD candidate at University College London where my research focuses on 17th century women Latin poets.

It is an extraordinary honor to impart my love of Latin to you. Languages are my passion. I speak several, including Japanese, Spanish, and French. My commitment is to not only help you master reading and writing in Latin, but to help you see how relevant and captivating this beautiful language is. I have taught Latin to students in grades 7 through 12, and have experience teaching Amsco's Latin is Fun (Books I and II), Wheelock's, Memoria Press, and Blochazy Carducci's Latin for the New Millennium (I, II, and III). I am well-versed in the AP Latin curriculum. Although I teach Classical pronunciation, I can also use Medieval (Ecclesiastical), according to your need. As a current high school Latin teacher, my strengths are: 1) making connections with students, 2) bringing dry material to life, and 3) showing the relevance of Latin to the real world. With my friendly approach, I am equipped to address a variety of diverse learning needs in every level of Latin (I, II, III, and AP).

I'm a lifelong Francophile (lover of all things French) since my first trip to Quebec at 4 years old. I've been teaching French for over 20 years, 19 of which simultaneously virtually while still a brick and mortar classroom teacher. I have an M. Ed in Teaching World Languages, a Bachelor's in French and have lived and studied in two Francophone countries and visited numerous others. “If you speak to a man in a language, that goes to his head. If you speak to a man in his language, it goes to his heart.” (Author Unknown). I understand the global impact of being multilingual on both career and life opportunities. Learning other languages for me is like solving a linguistic and cultural puzzle. I enjoy finding ways to unlock the linguistic codes, and breaking down the vocabulary and grammar. I want to make language learning fun, the grammar concepts easy to understand, and raise students’ confidence in their ability to learn another language and become globally-minded citizens.
